The Grade Fours
Ms. Laine Anderson and Ms. Jessica Eguia
As part of the Grade Four's unit on colonization, the students participated in many Aboriginal Education experiences:
Resource: http://kairosblanketexercise.org "I'm so sad about what happened to Aboriginals here in Canada. Their children got taken away to residential schools and many died from diseases. It was unfair to put aboriginal people on reserves, and not with much resources. I think now we should not let this ever happen again. We need to work towards fairness and peace."
- Tayis, Grade 4 "I'm so passionate about this topic. Why are we only learning about this today? How did this go on during colonization? From now on, everyone should be taught to respect Aboriginal culture and a little bit of Squamish language in order to keep this culture alive!" - Makena, Grade 4 |

Exhibition Student
"Through my exhibition research, I found out how aboriginal people are being affected by global warming/climate change. One November 23, 2016, many environmentalists, academics, researchers came to talk about climate change and the local indigenous perspectives. Lady Grant, and elder at Museum Nation talked about how before ponds would completely freeze and there would be a surplus of salmon and eulachon runs. Now, water isn't freezing completely causing indigenous cultures to have their life in danger. And, because of pollution, there are not as many fish, and more importantly; they are not as healthy. Global warming is also impacting the Inuit. From my research, I got much value using an aboriginal lens, especially when highlighting the environment." - Sophia, Grade 7 Student |
